THE GEFFKEN EDUCATIONAL INTERNSHIP

National Sculpture Society is a non-profit organization, founded in 1893, dedicated to the support of realist sculpture through exhibitions, publications, and education. The Society is currently accepting applications for the Geffken Educational Internship in 2008. Interns learn through direct experience in a working environment at the Society's headquarters in the Park Avenue Atrium, Manhattan.

Internships are geared to the interests and skills of the individual and are available in each of the following areas, or a combination therof:

History of American Sculpture/Archival Restoration: Most time will be spent on the Archival Restoration Project, which is designed to bring NSS archives and membership files up to preservation standards. Other duties include answering inquiries from the public about NSS members and American sculpture, maintenance of membership files, and general office support.

Publishing and Publicity: This intern will assist in the research, creation and publication of a bi-monthly news bulletin, and will have the opportunity to develop skills in writing and editing both for the newsbulletin and press releases.

Arts Administration: The arts administration intern will assist in almost every aspect of the Society's efforts, including exhibitions, fundraising, press, educational programming, and general office support.

Please note: All interns can expect to spend some time performing clerical tasks; the amount will vary and should not exceed 25% of work time (this is true for all employees as well). Every effort will be made to insure each intern gains valuable experience, suited to his or her interests and educational goals. Academic credit is also available, depending on whether the individual applies through an academic institution.

The following applies to all educational internships:

  1. commitment for at least 16 hours/week
  2. must be computer literate: WORD and preferably Pagemaker, Excel and Photoshop
  3. all applications are reviewed by the Education Committee
  4. interns are paid bi-weekly (as are all employees), thanks to a fund that was established by Charlotte Geffken, for whom this internship is named. Salary varies, based on time commitment.
