New York, New York – The National Sculpture Society (NSS) is pleased to present the Elected Members Invitational at the organization's headquarters in the Park Avenue Atrium at 237 Park Avenue/466 Lexington Avenue, in midtown Manhattan. Opening on Monday, July 14, the Invitational features the works of 36 Elected NSS Members.
The Elected Members Invitational showcases the sculpture of some of National Sculpture Society's finest artists. The open-theme exhibition alternates annually with NSS's Fellows Invitational and the works on display reflect a level of excellence in figurative sculpture which has become the benchmark of the 115-year old institution. Elected Members from as far away as Ecuador, England, Mexico and Africa submitted work as diverse in subject, style and discipline as their home countries. Highlights include bronze portraits of familiar and fictitious individuals; whimsical characters made of marble, terra cotta and wood; and creatures, both real and imagined, in unexpected settings.
Elected Membership is the penultimate level of achievement in National Sculpture Society and Members are voted into the organization by a rigorous jurying process set forth by their peers. Fellows (FNSS), Elected Members (NSS), and Associates comprise the levels of sculptor membership of the organization, which is international in scope and appeal. National Sculpture Society and its members are dedicated to the creation and showcasing of art that is inspired by nature.
Sculptors featured in the exhibition include: Béla Bácsi, Richard Barnet, Joy Kroeger Beckner, Ron Beuzenburg, Paige Bradley, Polly Brumder, Jay Hall Carpenter, Elayne Doyle, Thomas Durham, Martin Eichinger, Donna Forma, Kathleen Friedenberg, Dimitry Gerrman, Robert Glen, Christopher R. Gowell, Harold Holden, John Houser, Anne Huibregtse, Lee Hutt, Martin Isler, Amy Kann, Elizabeth MacQueen, Janice Mauro, Marc Mellon, Dora Natella, Lawrence Noble, Leo E. Osborne, Louise Peterson, Gary Lee Price, Sandra Shaw, Tim Shinabarger, Tom Silveroli, Christopher Smith, Willy Wang, Stuart Williamson and Bruce Wolfe.
National Sculpture Society was founded in New York City in 1893 by a group of America's most prominent sculptors. Its members have created much of this country's public sculpture, coins, and medals since the late 1800s. It is the oldest organization of professional sculptors in the United States, and has been hosting exhibitions for over a century.
The Elected Members Invitational is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, July 14 through November 14, 2008. All exhibitions are open to the public free of charge; a brochure and price list are available.
